Shoveling snow can be an annoying, yet essential, wintertime task. We hope these tips from Houselogic will help make it not so much of a…chore.
- Spray your shovel with cooking oil
When snow sticks to your shovel it can make this already arduous even more obnoxious. This added annoyance can be avoided with a light coat of non-stick cooking oil, which will make the snow slide right off.
- Lay out a tarp before the snow
This tip requires you to do a bit of homework. Not hard homework, you’ll just need to know when it is expected to snow. On the night before the expected snowfall, simply lay a tarp out on your walkway. When the snow has stopped falling, simply remove the tarp and you’ve got a snow-free sidewalk!
To pull this off you’ll need a tarp, some firewood (or other heavy objects), some twine, and a little bit of prep work. Before it snows, use the firewood to weigh down the tarp so that it doesn’t blow away. Tie the twine to both the tarp and to a shovel standing upright in your yard. You’ll use the shovel to pull out the snow-laden tarp.
- Make a homemade de-icing cocktail
De-icers are a great way to cut through icy layers of snow and make snow removal so much easier! A lot of commercial de-icers are pretty harsh on the environment and your property, and you likely already have the ingredients for this homemade de-icer!
Use vinegar before a storm to make ice and snow removal easier:
-Combine 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water.
-Spray or pour gently before a storm.
To keep sidewalk and steps from getting icy after a storm:
-Combine 2 parts rubbing alcohol to 1 part water.
-apply to minimize runoff.
